Morrigan: Early 20th-century Japanese chintz

Part of our Pret a Dormir collection bringing together rare textiles with British craftsmanship is the Morrigan with a uniquely sourced early 20th-century Japanese cotton chintz.   The collection showcases how the act of combining old, rich textiles with new distinctive frames, can create memorable, individual collectibles and ultimately, much cherished pieces for the home.

We offer the people the chance to expand their creative boundaries by covering our headboard frames with either a vintage fabric sent to us or an Ensemblier-sourced vintage piece with a consultation.  Alongside the chosen vintage fabric comes various details to choose from, such as brass studs, elaborate trimmings, or a plain edge or pipe.  Each headboard is uniquely crafted using raw materials such as organic British wool, hessian webbing, upholstery horsehair, and GOTS cotton lining.

Ensemblier was founded on the concept of providing good designs to a retail market. Inspiration has been sought from a variety of places taking references in the V&A art library to picture frames and tombstones. Pivotal to our intent of ‘good design’ with elegant, thoughtful proportions is to support traditional highly-skilled craftsmen using natural, sustainable materials. All our headboards are custom-made to our clients’ requirements.

The frames are solid beech, dowell-jointed, made either 'wall hung' with a mattress slip or 'to the floor' with a cut out to accommodate for skirting. Being of frame construction with natural materials, rather than a board with a foam filling as so many of our competitors are, the frames are webbed with rubberised hair, cotton bump and organic calico. Our entirely bespoke Atelier headboards use loose hair fillings with lambswool skin wadding. Our headboards are designed and manufactured to last a lifetime and beyond, in that they can be recovered and will not crumble in 8 years, like the toxic chemicals of foam.

All our headboards carry an embossed and numbered Ensemblier brass tag, to ensure authenticity, and are encased in a protective calico travel bag for storage and transportation.

All our headboards are bespoke made to the client requirements, all our designs are therefore adjustable. We also make to US & Europe sizes.

Please contact us to discuss the most suitable height for your room.

All our headboards take around 40 hours to make using traditional craftsmanship and with the addition of the 'gainage' to the Constance, this skill takes time which we hope our clients can appreciate.

Our lead-time is 10-12 weeks.  This begins upon clear receipt of deposit and sign-off of production drawings.  Please note 8 weeks must be allowed upon receipt of C.O.M.

We are always happy to make variations in size of all our headboards through our Atelier service.  This requires an extended lead-time of around 14-16 weeks to aid in the additional drawings and templates required.

Courier charges can be quoted upon confirmation of the delivery address.  International shipping available.

We pride ourselves on our unique collection of designs, inspiration taken from years of scouring archives, books, directories and acquiring old pieces.  Our collection is a basis and template point to work with our customers on unique pieces, that our investments pieces.  We therefore, take our intellectual property incredibly seriously and will actively pursue any infringements of this.
