Brigid: Kurdish twill wool c. 1980 with leather pipe
Ensemblier's Pret a Dormir collection brings together rare one-off textiles to create investment pieces, combining a distinctive frame using exquisite British craftsmanship with a unique fabric to create an objet d'art.
Our beloved Brigid in our new colleciton is gracefully upholstered in a Kurdish twill wool that started life as a large shawl, originating from Iran c.1980. We colour matched the rich earthy tones of the wool with a vegetable-dyed brown leather which was hand-piped around the edge for an elegant and unique style.
In our Vintage Colleciton, we offer the chance to upholster our four new shapes Brigid, Dagda, Eriu and Morrigan, in either a vintage fabric sent to us or an Ensemblier-sourced vintage piece with a consultation. Alongside the chosen vintage fabric comes various details to choose from, such as brass studs, elaborate trimmings, or a plain edge or pipe.
Upholstery using vintage fabrics creates a story to tell, a talking piece, and combined with our British craftsmanship, a piece with longevity within a home that values an eye for design and natural living. The back of each frame has a numbered brass plate marking its production journey and maker, signalling the quality of manufacturing and a seal of longevity.

Ensemblier was founded on the concept of providing good designs to a retail market. Inspiration has been sought from a variety of places taking references in the V&A art library to picture frames and tombstones. Pivotal to our intent of ‘good design’ with elegant, thoughtful proportions is to support traditional highly-skilled craftsmen using natural, sustainable materials. All our headboards are custom-made to our clients’ requirements.
The frames are solid beech, dowell-jointed, made either 'wall hung' with a mattress slip or 'to the floor' with a cut out to accommodate for skirting. Being of frame construction with natural materials, rather than a board with a foam filling as so many of our competitors are, the frames are webbed with rubberised hair, cotton bump and organic calico. Our entirely bespoke Atelier headboards use loose hair fillings with lambswool skin wadding. Our headboards are designed and manufactured to last a lifetime and beyond, in that they can be recovered and will not crumble in 8 years, like the toxic chemicals of foam.
All our headboards carry an embossed and numbered Ensemblier brass tag, to ensure authenticity, and are encased in a protective calico travel bag for storage and transportation.
All our headboards are bespoke made to the client requirements, all our designs are therefore adjustable. We also make to US & Europe sizes.
Please contact us to discuss the most suitable height for your room.
All our headboards take around 40 hours to make using traditional craftsmanship and with the addition of the 'gainage' to the Constance, this skill takes time which we hope our clients can appreciate.
Our lead-time is 10-12 weeks. This begins upon clear receipt of deposit and sign-off of production drawings. Please note 8 weeks must be allowed upon receipt of C.O.M.
We are always happy to make variations in size of all our headboards through our Atelier service. This requires an extended lead-time of around 14-16 weeks to aid in the additional drawings and templates required.
Courier charges can be quoted upon confirmation of the delivery address. International shipping available.
We pride ourselves on our unique collection of designs, inspiration taken from years of scouring archives, books, directories and acquiring old pieces.
